Mount Buninyong South Walk – map with contours
A major feature of the region is Mt Buninyong, an extinct volcano, 745 m above sea level, 5 km East of Buninyong. From the top of the fire tower, with luck you can see the buildings of Melbourne. A photo at this is at the Buninyong information Centre, Warrenheip St opposite the Post Office. Mt Buninyong is one of the few volcanoes in Victoria with its native vegetation intact. It provides a habitat for koalas and wallabies though they are rarely seen.
In 1837, an exploration party left Corio climbing the Mt. to survey the district. The group included Somerville Learmonth who with his brother Thomas , established a property near Buninyong in 1839.
The South Walk Circuit is one of the more challenging walks on Mt Buninyong. If the Kokoda Track is a 10, this would be a 2 . The Circuit provides a useful challenge for people starting their training for that walk.
Park on top of the Mount and follow the Goldfield’s Track signs. At the crater follow the South walk signs. When you reach the down Road [5] turn left then right at the junction of the up and the down road [6]. Care needs to be taken walking along these sections of road. At [7] turn off the road to the fire tower. If you miss this turn you will still end back at your starting point.
