Mt Buninyong Circuit, Great Dividing Trail
11.5Km Estimated time: 3hours, 30 minutes.
The walk starts and finishes in the township of Buninyong, however there are several other entry points. The circuit passes through the Buninyong Botanic Gardens, goes over the small Mt Innes volcanic neck, proceeds up Hastie’s Lane, crosses the Midlands Highway, goes along Granny White’s Lane, then up Blackberry Lane and the ZigZag track to the summit. The lookout/fire-watching Tower has great views of the sorrounding countryside. The return trip goes past the crater, down the Mt Buninyong Scenic Road to Gittings Lane and Elizabeth Street, skirting the Union Jack Reserve where there are several interesting side bush tracks (see Union Jack Reserve, below).
Union Jack Reserve walk
The Union Jack Reserve is an area of bushland in the north-eastern corner of Buninyong.
A self guided walk has been developed for walkers to learn more about the history, flora and fauna of the Reserve. Information is provided at points of interest along the way. The short walk will take you about 40 minutes, past historic diggings, and one of the old home sites. You may even catch a glimpse of some of the elusive wildlife.
The longer walk will take about two hours. On this walk you can learn more about frogs, tree dwelling mammals and visit the mine site and rest area at Locomotive Hill, where two men lost their lives in 1933.
